Church of the Trinity
This article is part of the series Orthodoxy on the borders. In this series, we will travel together through the Orthodox World with the aim of finding all the places where Orthodoxy has been transmitted over the years. Orthodoxy is found in all parts of the world as it is an integral part of the history of all peoples.
A shining example of this is the Church of the Holy Trinity located on King George Island at the South Pole.
The desire to build a church in Antarctica was expressed in Russia throughout the 1990s. The church is a wooden structure in the traditional Russian style.
It is maintained by one or two priests who volunteer from the church in Sergiyev Posad and serve for a year. One of the priests’ duties is to pray for the 64 souls of Russians who died on missions to Antarctica, as well as to baptize new Christians in the Southern Ocean.
On January 29, 2007, the church celebrated the first church wedding in Antarctica.
In the following articles in the ‘Orthodoxy on the borders’ series, we will visit other churches in remote or isolated parts of the world. If you want to learn more about Orthodoxy, check out our other blog posts!
