Synaxis of the Angels and Archangels
To the Archangel Michael.
I longed, Michael, to sing you a fitting hymn,
but I have no immaterial song worthy of you.
On 8 November, Orthodox Christians celebrate an important feast of the Church: the Synaxis of the Angels and Archangels.
To the Archangel Gabriel.
Seeing you, Gabriel, great angel of joy,
I rejoice greatly, and longing for you gives me wings.
Angels are messengers of God. In their encounters with human beings, they may take visible form. Their appearances in the biblical accounts accompany significant moments in the unfolding of God’s will.
The eighth day honours the leaders of the heavenly host.
Michael and Gabriel are honoured as leaders of the angelic hosts. Scripture and Church tradition associate them with pivotal events. Church tradition connects Michael with events in the Old Testament, while Gabriel announces the good news at the Annunciation to the Theotokos.
For the Synaxis of the nine ranks:
Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominions, Authorities, Principalities, Powers, Archangels and Angels.
What child born after nine months
could utter words worthy of the nine ranks?
On 8 November, we honour the angels and archangels and remember their ministry in the life of the Church.
